Rio Mason Busujima

Rio wanted to know when he had asked.

Being a parent meant being a little sneaky and as it was, since you couldn’t leave your five-year old son home alone and Rio didn’t like buying presents without you, you were in a store as a family unit. You had wandered off as your young one pulled you away, excitedly pointing at some cardboard figure of a cartoon he watched just about every morning while Rio was perusing the wares, having a general checklist in his head for the types of things his son liked. His eyes drifted to a little pink toy, it was a plane with random passengers on it and he distinctly remembered the way his boys eyes had lit up when he saw it in the magazine ad. He had been fascinated with the concept of flying and had asked that day to be taken on a plane, growing quite upset when you told him that it wasn’t as simple as that.

Rio had to get it for him so he could at least use his imagination.

“Wasn’t that your son you were just standing with?” He should’ve known from the moment this man struck up a conversation with him that it would be anything but good but Rio tried to hold out some sort of hope.

“Yes. This is his favorite color.”

“And you’re… you were a soldier, yeah? That’s what I’m understanding from your get up.”

Rio had no idea what this had to do with anything but he nodded his head, his patience for ‘polite’ conversation dwindling by the second.

“You were a soldier and you’re raising a sissy?”

“…I’ll be going now.” Rio tried to keep his tone even as he was never one to let things get to him, especially not trivial little things like this, but he knew how sensitive his son was to adults speaking this way about him. Your son liked what he liked and neither your or Rio had ever made it an issue and he certainly didn’t plan on it now. Anything else the stranger has to offer up dies on their lips as Rio’s icy glare practically crushes their voice box, turning to calmly join you a steps away.

“You almost crushed that toy,” You mumbled to Rio as you took it from his hands, looking it over for any serious damage, “I know that dude was probably an asshole but…”

“It’s fine. I have a few more things I think he’d like from other places.”

“Good, then I’ll go buy this while you distract him! Good luck, he won’t stop playing with those little dolls over there. They’ve got one in a uniform that looks just like you!”

Rio couldn’t help but smile as he joined his son at the small pink table where there were play toys set out for children to try without having to purchase them, seating himself on the smallest plastic chair he’d ever seen and testing the limit on how much it could take. When he’s handed a doll to play as he takes the job seriously, getting into his role as soldier once more while his son pretended to be a commanding officer, able to accurately represent the character due to all of the stories his father had told him.

Rio knew in that moment he would do anything to make his son happy.
